- Story Text: Thousands of people fled the mainly farming land around Indonesia's Mount Sinabung volcano, the highest mountain in north Sumatra, after it erupted on Sunday (September 15).
Several hundred found shelter in a local church.
"Less than four thousands villagers have been evacuated and stayed in five shelters including a church you see right now," said Asren Nasution, a senior member of the local disaster management agency.
Local health centres handed out face masks to protect people from volcanic ash filling the air.
The eruption caused volcanic ash to rain over several areas surrounding the mountain and caused delays at Kualanamu airport, in the town of Medan, some 50 kilometres from the volcano.
"This morning a few planes were held back due to visibility problems - it was only two hundred to three hundred metres - and because of the fog," said Djamal Amri, airport duty manager.
"It's definitely fog that mixes with ashes from mount Sinabung eruption, and we want to ask meteorologists and geophysics agency to examine it," Amri added.
The national meteorology bureau urged residents to stay at least 3 kilometres away from the volcano. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
