- Story Text: Members of the Russian ice hockey community and ordinary Moscow residents paid their respects to Viktor Tikhonov who coached the Soviet Union and Unified Team to three straight Olympic ice hockey gold medals.
Tikhonov died in Moscow at the age of 84 on Sunday (November 23) after a long illness.
Russian soldiers and hockey players took turns standing watch by the open casket inside CSKA's hockey arena, while Muscovites filed by and sports figures greeted the family, including Tikhonov's grandson and namesake SKA forward Viktor Tikhonov.
Russian Ice Hockey Federation President Vladislav Tretiak, who also took a turn guarding the casket, said Tikhonov was a great coach who would be forever remembered in Russian sport.
"I believe he was an outstanding coach. He was always an example to us, of strong discipline, patriotism for your country, and he of course was distinguished by his professionalism, 100 percent professionalism, he fully dedicated himself to hockey. He was always with his notebook, he was always thinking about hockey wherever he was. Even when we went to a concert, he was sitting and taking notes. I once looked by chance, and he was writing the exercises to give the next day," Tretiak said.
In addition to winning gold at the 1984, 1988 and 1992 Olympics, Tikhonov claimed eight world championship titles as a coach.
He was also in charge of the Soviet team that lost to the United States in the semi-finals of the 1980 Games in a game known as the 'Miracle on Ice'. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
