- Story Text: Thousands of students and Cobas union members took to the streets of Rome on Thursday (November 17) to protest against austerity measures.
The demonstration which rallied near the colosseum, took place as newly-appointed prime minister Mario Monti addressed the upper house of parliament, hours before a confidence vote on his new government.
"The (Mario) Monti government maybe able to enjoy its honeymoon period for another couple of weeks because people are so happy that Silvio Berlusconi has gone," said one of the Cobas union leaders Piero Bernocchi.
"But this will finish soon because Monti's programme is extremely capitalist and follows on with this disastrous idea that the weakest need to pay for this crisis," Bernocchi said.
Students do not see any respite from education cuts and poor job opportunities, even after the demise of former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi.
Close to the senate, eggs, tomatoes and bananas were thrown at police who took cover under their riot shields. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
