It seems, according to elements we have access to, that the presumptions -- and I repeat, presumptions -- of use of chemical weapons are increasingly supported. We are in the process of verifying all that in a very precise manner and we are consulting with our partners to see what concrete consequences we are going to draw from this." - Story Text: France is consulting with its partners over how to respond to increasingly strong evidence of chemical weapons use in Syria, Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said on Monday (May 27).
Fabius made the comments after attending a day-long meeting of European Union foreign ministers in Brussels to find common ground on the bloc's Syrian arms embargo.
"We were really concerned over the subject regarding the behaviour of Bashar Al-Assad's regime. It seems, according to elements we have access to, that the presumptions -- and I repeat, presumptions -- of use of chemical weapons are increasingly supported. We are in the process of verifying all that in a very precise manner and we are consulting with our partners to see what concrete consequences we are going to draw from this," he said.
His comments were made after the French newspaper Le Monde said it had first-hand accounts that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has repeatedly used chemical weapons against rebel fighters in Damascus. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
