- Story Text: The first Arabian thoroughbred horse show was hosted in Benghazi on Friday (May 11). It's the fourth time this type of contest has been held in Libya, but the first since Muammar Gaddafi was toppled after four decades of rule.
Renamed the Arab Spring Festival after the uprisings across the Arab world last year, the winner said the competition was fairer than in previous years.
First prize winner Hussien Mokhtar said: "It's a beautiful feeling to win, and congratulations to the Libyan people on the liberation. Honestly we were oppressed before, we used to participate in contests with the same horses but they used to oppress us and keep us in the back. And now, thank God, we're participating with the same horses and we're at the front."
A succession of beautiful thoroughbred Arabian horses of all colours were paraded around the arena, trotting and leaping, and displaying their ability and control. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
