- Story Text: The famous Rolex Submariner watch specially designed for Special Agent 007 James Bond in the 1973 movie "Live and Let Die" is to go under the hammer at Christie's in Geneva.
The wristwatch was one of the principal gadgets where the watch's two special features - a buzz saw and intensive magnet - both saves the life of James Bond and helps him unzip the dress of Miss Caruso's (played Madeleine Smith) dress, Aurel Bacs, International Head of the Christie's watch department, told Reuters Television on Friday (November 11).
"In the movie it has two distinctive features. One is it has a bezel that is rotating at high speed. As we can see the bezel was cut like a buzz saw and it actually saves Bond's life from being thrown into the shark basin at the bad guy's station", says Aurel Bacs and adds: "Another feature that was built into this watch, which in reality we can well imagine does not really work, is a very strong magnet, which was initially meant to save Bond's life in order to deviate bullets. Now, knowing Bond, he always has a few funny ideas outside the official performance and not only does he make use of the magnet to unzip a lady's dress, but he also makes his teaspoon fly across the room."
The watch was designed by art director Syd Cain, and was modified to be used in the film from its original shape as a Rolex stainless steel submariner wristwatch.
Two framed black and white photo prints from the "Live and Let Die" movie as well as the original sketch production drawing made by Syd Cain are being sold together with the watch.
The Christie's auction will take place in Geneva on Monday (November 14) where the entire 'package' is estimated to be sold at a price between 230,000 and 450,000 U.S. dollars. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
