- Story Text: Baby rhino is fighting fit again after getting over broken leg.
The baby rhino "Patna" strutted proudly in front of visitors and photographers in Berlin's Animal Park on Friday (March 11), the first time he has been out in public since getting over a serious leg injury.
One day after Patna was born on July 21, 2004, his mother "Betty" stood on his front left leg and he suffered a serious break.
"It was a serious split fracture," explained Claus Pohl, the Vice-Director of the Berlin Animal Park. "The problem was that it was a open fracture, which means that there was also a flesh wound. This wound became infected by the dung and dirt that was in the pen. Then the wound festered," he added.
Luckily, Patna has made a speedy recovery and Pohl says the rhino currently weighs 262 kilos. But he will weigh two-and-a-half tonnes once fully grown, and keepers at the animal park hope that if his leg remains stable so that Patna will be able to carry this weight without problems.
The rhino spent several weeks in the Animal Clinic while getting over his injury, and was then kept away from public attention in the Animal Park's elephant house.
Although he seemed to be on the road to making a full recovery, it was only after his last x-ray that the vets gave the go-ahead for Patna to appear in public again. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
