- Story Text: Christian Dior reacted to financial worries with "bolder is better" attitude at the fashion house's dramatic, technicolour "garden" show at the Rodin Museum in Paris on Monday (July 5).
The first day of haute couture week saw British designer John Galliano play head gardener as he recalled the days of his youth surrounded by the beauty of nature.
Against a backdrop of oversized orange tulips, the designer kicked off the show with a violet coat, cinched in with a red belt, a silhouette which Monsieur Dior himself first championed in the 1950s as the revolutionary New Look. Dior discarded the notion of conservative, boxy shapes after World War II in favour of waspy waists and voluptuous skirts, which was criticised by some for its wasteful, overuse of fabrics but adored by many Parisian women. This feeling of recharging the economy with strong creativity was a feeling it seemed that Galliano wanted to instill in the audience.
Other noteable looks included the mixing of bold colours against one another such as pink and red and purple, lime, and turquoise.
Dresses were made to look like a variety of flowers, from tulip skirts layered over ball gowns to floor length gowns made to resemble delphiniums.
Models heads were even encased in cellophane wrapping, used to represent that of the plastic used by florists when wrapping a bunch of flowers.
Galliano's final bows for Dior shows have become nearly as much anticipated as the clothes themselves. This time round, he walked out in a 1920s rowing costume complete with straw boating hat and veil for a dramatic touch.
Among the stars in the front row were actors Jared Leto, Jessica Alba and Gossip Girl's Blake Lively.
