- Story Text: Dozens of fishing boats have traversed the waters associated with famed writer Ernest Hemingway at the annual international fishing tournament named in his honour.
Following in the footsteps of famous U.S. writer, Ernest Hemingway, 45 boats from various countries took part in the 51st annual Ernest Hemingway International Fishing Tournament in Havana, Cuba on Thursday (June 07).
Hemingway, who authored classics such as, "The Old Man and The Sea" and "To Have and Have Not" - books which depict scenes from the Cuban coast - was a fishing aficionado and before his death in 1961, often traveled to the Caribbean island to fish.
The competition, where catching the largest billfish is the goal, employs a "tag and release" system whereby the fish is released after being catalogued and weighed.
Win or lose, Michael Levitt, chairman of the International Game Fishing Association, was determined to enjoy the day.
"It's a great chance for us to see this beautiful country, we are really enjoying ourselves," he said.
The tournament typically attracts fisherman from all over the world and this year is no exception with entries from Zimbabwe, Germany, Switzerland, Peru, Mexico, Spain and Great Britain. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
