- Story Text: Spain's Indignados movement set up a mock camp in central Madrid on Friday (May 10) ahead of the 15th May second anniversary of the group known as 15M.
The movement gathered steam as part of the "indignados" (indignant) protests against the government's spending cuts and failure to revive the moribund economy, inspiring "occupy" movements around the globe.
The initial 15M protesters set up a camp in central Madrid to express their outrage over the financial crisis, the group occupied the Puerta del Sol square for over four weeks in 2011.
One of Friday's protests saw demonstrators gathering in the courtyard of the Reina Sofia Museum and raising banners condemning cuts in the arts and culture sectors.
A demonstrator whose home was foreclosed spoke of Spain's housing crisis.
"It's an emergency situation, there are too many people evicted from their homes, without any help, and the government doesn't seem to know," said Mariana Diaz.
Property foreclosures rose nearly fourfold in the four years since 2008 compared to the previous four-year period. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
