- Story Text: Italian soldiers have begun setting up camp at Bagram airbase ahead of the arrival of their main contingent later in the week.
Members of the Italian army's logistics team began the task of setting up camp at Bagram Air Base on Monday (February 3).
The bulk of Italy's Alpine Regiment is due to arrive in Bagram on Thursday (February 8) and will join more than 8,000 U.S. troops stationed there.
The United States remains the largest coalition force in Afghanistan. The coalition is hunting for the remains of the ousted Taliban regime and the al Qaeda network it sheltered.
Al Qaeda is blamed for the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.
Britain, Poland, Italy, Canada, Spain, Norway and several other countries have sent troops to Afghanistan to help the mine-clearing, construction and other tasks.
Kabul, the capital, is patrolled by an in international peacekeeping force that includes troops from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Great Britain, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden and Turkey. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
