- Story Text: At least sixty one people are known to have died as floods swept through the north of Bangladesh. Experts fear the death-toll will rise as reports from inaccessible areas of the country arrive. More than five hundred thousand people have been made homeless by the water and the flooding is believed to have caused widespread crop losses. People in the town of Rajbari have been using makeshift boats to move around in and the government has set up camps for the victims. Although river levels have begun dropping, no immediate effect has been visible and medical experts fear the floods may leave an epidemic of cholera in their wake. Agriculture officials say the water is threatening what had been predicted as a bumper harvest, and they fear the shortfall in production will lead to a widespread famine next year.
