So a very wearable, very easy collection, quite classical but always this sense of fun." CAMERA OPERATORS SMITH TALKING TO PEOPLE AT SHOW

- Story Text: Paul Smith, one of the biggest names in British fashion, has brought a splash of colour to London Fashion Week.
Veteran British designer Paul Smith let his tailoring do the talking with his Spring/Summer 2004 show at London Fashion Week on Monday (September 22). The practical, wearable collection included pencil skirts, fitted trousers and Smith's trademark tailored coats and jackets.
Colours were brighter than in previous collections.
Fuschia, electric blue and dayglo yellow were all used, along with a generous smattering of the old staples, black and gray. Fabrics included silk, satin and denim.
Severe tailoring was softened with brightly coloured linings and piping in pinks and yellows.
"A lot of the clothes are really quite simple clothes but when you open (them) up you'll find a fantastic lining.
Or there'll be a cute pair of trousers but the side strap is in bright pink or the shirt will have different coloured buttons or different coloured button holes. So a very wearable, very easy collection, quite classical, but always this sense of fun," Smith said.
Paul Smith is one of the biggest names in British fashion. He has eight clothing ranges, 20 stand-alone shops and over 200 shops and concessions in Japan. His company's annual turnover is over 100 million pounds (150 million U.S. dollars).
Born in Nottingham, England in 1946, Smith started out working in a local clothing warehouse at the age of 18. In 1970, he opened his first shop and took evening classes in tailoring. Six years later he showed his first clothing collections in Paris under the Paul Smith label.
Smith was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 1994 for services to the fashion industry, and was granted a knighthood in 2000. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
