- Story Text: Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi ignored Sikh extremist threats as he led thousands of mourners to mark the first anniversary of his mother's murder on October 31. About 40 thousand police and paramilitary troops were posted throughout New Delhi as Mr. Gandhi walked to Indira Gandhi's cremation site. The prime minister told the crowd that his mother had guided India to self-sufficiency in food and had ensured the nation's unity. "Whether on the battlefield or in the fight against poverty, she showed the world that nobody can keep India down, "he said. Later, the Prime Minister and other mourners gathered in Mrs. Gandhi's garden, where she died one year ago. At exactly 9.17 a.m., they observed one minute's silence. It was the exact moment that two Sikhs from Mrs. Gandhi's bodyguard killed her as she walked from her home to an adjoining office. Indira Gandhi died five months after she ordered troops to storm the Sikh holiest shrine, Amritsar's Golden Temple. Her murder was followed by weeks of bloodshed and riots in which nearly three thousand people, mostly Sikhs, were killed.
