INTRODUCTION: Polish Foreign Minister Jozef Czyrek has visited France and West Germany, to detail his country's economic problems. In Paris Mr. Czyrek received a pledge of continued support from France, while in West Germany he heard that further aid to Poland may be discussed next month.
SYNOPSIS: Mr. Czyrek and French Prime Minister Pierre Mauroy met at the Premier's offices in Paris on Monday (17 August). M. Mauroy acknowledged that Poland was going through a "staggering crisis" which might last for several years. He pledged that France would "assist Poland right through".
The Prime minister also announced at his office's that the French government will help in re-scheduling Polish debts, and press its Western partners to grant Poland a 500 million U.S. dollar loan. France already assists Poland with food supplies, but M. Mauroy promised that more aid would be forthcoming.
Concluding the talks, the French Premier said that he'd listened with gravity to the detailed account Mr. Czyrek gave him about his country's problems. "France will continue to aid Poland and the Polish people" he promised.
On Tuesday (18 August) Mr. Czyrek travelled to Bonn, for talks with West German Foreign Minister hans-Dietrich Genscher.
After a brief ceremony, the two men then got down to discussing ways of improving Poland's economy.
Herr Genscher advised Poland, as the country's major creditor, to rejoin the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to help solve its financial crisis. Such a move has been under close consideration in Warsaw since early this year. Herr Genscher said it would "considerably increase" the readiness of other countries to provide aid.
Polish membership to the IMF would enable the fund to set loan terms and monitor Poland's economy. Herr Genscher said further aid may be discussed by Bonn Ministers next month.
