- Story Text: INTRODUCTION: The United States Consulate in Israeli-occupied West Jerusalem was the site on Monday (16 November) of demonstrations against the Reagan administration's policies.A large group gathered outside the Consulate, waving placards and chanting, indicating new strains on the already troubled US-Israel relationship.
SYNOPSIS: The protesters were expressing the fears of many Israelis that Washington is losing interest in the Camp David peace accords. The next step in that process will be the return to Egypt of the last portion of the Sinai, scheduled for next April.A shift of U.S.diplomatic support from Israel to Saudi Arabia worries dome Israelis.
There are also fears that the United States may push for a variation of Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Fahd's plan for an independent Palestinian state on the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with East Jerusalem as its capital.Israel would vigorously oppose this move.
