- Story Text: Ultranationalist members of Cyprus's ELAM Party staged a rally in the capital Nicosia on Thursday (March 28) to protest against a tough European Union rescue package.
Banks were shut for nearly two weeks while the government negotiated a 10 billion euro (13 billion USD) international bailout, the first in Europe's single currency zone to impose losses on bank depositors.
Marching in military style and waving Greek and Cypriot flags on Thursday, the protesters shouted: "ELAM demands traitors go to jail" and "Troika out of Cyprus", referring to the European Union, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank.
ELAM is a far right anti-immigrant party where some members wear a type of military uniform and stand at attention during protests.
"We believe that the crisis that we are going through is not just financial any more," said one protester, Christos Christou.
"It has become a national issue. It's time for people to wake up and demand what is theirs. The thieves must go to jail," he added.
With just 860,000 people, Cyprus has about 68 billion euros in its banks - a vastly outsized financial system that attracted deposits from abroad, especially Russia, as an offshore haven but foundered when investments in neighbouring Greece went sour.
The EU and IMF concluded that Cyprus could not afford a rescue unless it imposed losses on depositors, seen as anathema in previous euro zone bailouts. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
