- Story Text: The stars of new British comedy movie "Get Santa", as well as its director, sat down with Reuters to discuss the making of the new Christmas film.
"Get Santa" sees 9-year-old Tom (played by newcomer Kit Connor) and his father, Steve (Rafe Spall), team up to save Christmas, after they find Santa (Jim Broadbent) in the garden shed having crashed his sleigh in London. Things become even more complicated when Santa is arrested. The movie is directed by British director Christopher Smith who is best known for his horror films, including "Creep", "Severance" and "Black Death".
Spall, Connor and Smith reflected on Broadbent's portrayal of Santa Claus, with Broadbent absent from the junket.
"I think he's a very giving actor. Obviously he's a supremely talented actor but he's very warm and very giving and you know we had a read through and one of his lines was "ho ho ho". He's got to do that scene in prison where he says, you know, "What would FC [Father Christmas] normally say?" and he just does this whole...and he just came alive and so, I thought, this is going to be great and I hadn't even seen him with his costume on yet," said Smith.
Spall remarked, "We think that if Santa could choose he would choose Jim Broadbent to play him in a film of his life wouldn't he?"
"Get Santa" marks the motion picture debut of Kit Connor who takes a starring role in the film. Smith described him as a "brilliant young actor".
The director also reflected on working with several reindeer during the filming process: "I mean they're dim the reindeer, they're not like chimpanzees. They just stand there and one scene we shot the scene near the end where they're all taking off one of them kept falling asleep, kept lying down, we had to keep getting him up."
Connor, meanwhile, expressed his excitement at working with the animals, saying: "I loved them. There was one who played Dasher and he was my best friend on the shoot, my best. We took selfies, gave each other hugs, we were just best friends."
"Get Santa" is scheduled for release in UK cinemas on December 5. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
