- Story Text: Posters bearing the image of Bosnia's most wanted war-crimes suspect, Radovan Karadzic, have appeared on the streets of his wartime stronghold of Pale, showing support for Serb nationalism.
Dozens of posters in support of Bosnian Serb war c rimes fugitive Radovan Karadzic were plastered around his wartime base on Monday (January 19) in a show of defiance towards NATO troops who tried to capture him last week.
The A4 size posters, featuring the former Bosnian Serb president with his trademark shaggy mane of grey hair, appeared on almost all traffic signs and billboards and many shop windows and buildings in the winter spa town of Pale.
"(We are) always at your side," read a caption in Cyrillic lettering below a black and white picture of a smiling Karadzic, who has been indicted twice for genocide by the U.N. war crimes tribunal for his role in the 1992-95 Bosnian war.
Last week troops from Bosnia's NATO-led peacekeeping force failed to catch Karadzic in a four-day operation in and around Pale, 16 km (10 miles) southeast of the capital Sarajevo. He had been rumoured to have sought medical attention in the town.
Karadzic and his wartime military chief Ratko Mladic are charged with genocide for the 1995 Srebrenica massacre of up to 8,000 Bosnian Muslims and the wartime siege of Sarajevo.
But the two men are viewed as heroes by many Serbs in Bosnia and Serbia, who see them as defenders of Serb identity.
Police in Pale said they would remove the posters and investigate who had put them up, but some locals sympathised with their message. "This is the very best man", one young man said as he pointed to the poster of Karadzic which he was holding.
Karadzic is widely believed to hide out in mountainous eastern Bosnia, possibly spending some time in neighbouring Montenegro, while Mladic has been reported to be in Serbia.
An association of Karadzic supporters said after last week's manhunt both men were well protected and had a network of helpers who would keep them out of NATO's hands. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
