- Story Text: High water levels are preventing officials from removing some 20,000 litres of gasoline from a sunken freight ship in the river Danube.
High water levels on the river Danube hampered salvage efforts on Tuesday (November 20) to remove some 20,000 litres of fuel from a Bulgarian cargo ship which sank en route to Rousse from Brushlen on Monday (November 9), authorities said.
No crew were hurt when the boat sank overnight.
"The ship broke into two and can't be used any more, it should be cut to scrap after the fuel in it's tank, which is 20,000 liters, has been discharged," the head of Sea Administration-Rousse, Georgi Ivanov said.
"We haven't found a technical way to discharge the fuel from the tank yet. There are several options under discussion and when the level of the river drops down, the fuel will be discharged and ship scrapped," he added.
Authorities have surrounded the 'Ferrytop-1' with an oil enclosure to prevent further leakage. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
