- Story Text: Thousands of Dutch visitors have attended the Dutch Royal weddings exhibition in the Nieuwe Kerk, Amsterdam in anticipation of the wedding of Crown Prince Willem-Alexander to his fiancé Maxima Zorreguieta in less than a month.
The treasures at the exhibition date from royal weddings as far back as 1783.
It is less than a month until royal wedding bells will ring in the Netherlands.
On February 2, Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and his fiancée Maxima Zorreguieta will marry in the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) in Amsterdam. In honour of the wedding the city is now running an exhibition called "Yes, I Do." showing Dutch royal wedding gifts, gowns and other items.
During the last few weeks up to 100,000 people have visited the exhibition, admiring items like the golden royal carriage as well as an exquisite brooch, given to Queen Emma in 1879, featuring some 214 precious stones and diamonds.
Visitors also get the opportunity to see the inside of the church, where 2000 guests will watch Willem-Alexander and Maxima walk down the aisle to say their vows.
"It all starts from here, at eleven thirty at the second of February the royal couple enters the building and walks this long way to their seats," director of the exhibition Ernst W. Veen explains.
One of the oldest pieces in the exhibition is the only existing picture of the wedding of King Willem I and Princess Frederika Louise Wilhelmina, as well as their wedding certificate from 1791. Other wedding gifts on display include the 149-piece wash set in silver that Princess Sophie was given in 1837.
The cushions upon which the royal couple will be blessed at next month's wedding are also there, the cream cushions with satin and silk embroidery date from 1901.
At the centre of the exhibition is the royal coach, paintings on the side panels show scenes representing the Dutch colonies.
Following the wedding service the newly married couple will leave the Niewe Kerk and tour Amsterdam pulled by eight horses.
Visitors can also judge for themselves which of the wedding cakes designed by each of the 12 provinces might go on to be eaten by the royal couple on their wedding day. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
