And we thought as it's Hanukkah now and there is a tradition of playing with spin tops, we thought maybe the monkeys would enjoy playing with it. To make it more interesting for them we put food inside. You see there is a lot of interest in them. Although, they are not spinning the spin tops as we thought they might do. Although, monkeys can't do this but they can do this. We see that mainly they are trying to open it up. But still, it's a very good form of enrichment for them. The size of the spin top, it looks different from what they have had up to now. It's given them a bit of interest in it." - Story Text: Monkeys in Israel celebrating Hanukkah with seasonal toys.
An Israeli zoo gave monkeys a chance to celebrate Hanukkah early this year. On Monday (December 6), zookeepers at the Monkey Park in Kfar Daniel distributed dreidels, or spin tops, to the monkeys.
"We try and give them different kinds of enrichments every few days to make their life more interesting," said Tamar Fredman of Monkey Park.
"We thought as it's Hanukkah now and there is a tradition of playing with spin tops, we thought maybe the monkeys would enjoy playing with it. To make it more interesting for them we put food inside. You see there is a lot of interest in them. Although, they are not spinning the spin tops as we thought they might do."
Instead of spinning the toys, the monkeys look more interested in breaking them open to get to the special treat inside. In any event, the monkeys don't seem to be in the mood for sharing their dreidels.
Dreidels are traditional toys given to children to spin during Hanukkah. Hanukkah begins on Tuesday evening (December 7) and lasts for eight nights. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
