- Story Text: A time lapse video, filmed from the start of the parbuckling project to raise the Costa Concordia, shows how far the stricken cruise liner has moved, since rescue workers began work at around 9.00 a.m. (0700 GMT).
Engineering teams on the Italian island of Giglio began lifting the ship upright on Monday (September 16) in one of the most complex and costly maritime salvage operations ever attempted.
The first signs the wreck was shifting were registered at around midday as underwater cameras recorded water swirling in the area where the metal was resting on the sea bed.
A series of 11 towers with hydraulic mechanisms controlling 205-kg (450 lb) cables under the ship and attached to its side are slowly rotating the vessel, to bring it to sit on six specially built platforms drilled into the granite rock bed.
The wreck has now rotated 10 degrees but will need to rotate further, before the intake valves of the 11 sponsons attached to the port side of the hull, reach sea level. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
