- Story Text: Residents of Arab East Jerusalem hold Muslim Friday prayers in the streets after being denied entry to Al-Aqsa mosque. In Gaza, Palestinians pray amid rubble left after three weeks of fighting between Hamas and Israel.
Dozens of Palestinians held prayers in the streets of Arab East Jerusalem on Friday (January 23), after being denied entry to Al Aqsa mosque for Muslim Friday prayers.
Israeli police on Friday denied entry to Al Aqsa mosque for men under the age of 40.
Israeli police stood by as dozens of worshipers prayed peacefully in the streets near Nablus Gate, one of the gates which lead into the Old City of Jerusalem.
Meanwhile, in Gaza City, prayers took place in what was left of several mosques that were damaged during the Israeli offensive.
As part of its efforts to rebuild Gaza, Saudi Arabia announced that it will fund the construction of 30 mosques and 300 housing units in the coastal enclave.
The Israeli offensive was launched on December 27 with the declared aim of ending rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip, 1,300 Palestinians were killed and many thousands more were left homeless.
Israel completed a troop pullout on Wednesday (January 21) , three days after separate ceasefires declared by Israel and Hamas went into effect. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
