- Story Text: The carnival season in Germany has opened and thousands of fools have taken to the streets in celebration.
The carnival season started punctually on Thursday (November 11th) in Germany at 11.11am, with the tradition shouting "alaaf", and the throwing of sweets into the crowd.
In the traditional capital of carnival in Germany, thousands crowded the streets and marketplaces, their faces painted as clowns, singing to traditional music.
"The whole year is carnival for me," Margaret Kautsch told Reuters, "but today is carnival for everyone, and that is nice."
Traditionally, the carnival season also sees an increase in the number of couples separating and divorcing. "You dance with every man and carry your heart on your tongue, and have fun with every man. La la la... ", said Helga Schmidt as she danced away.
The fifth season in Germany runs through the whole of the winter until Ash Wednesday, during which time over four hundred balls and other festivities take place. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
