- Story Text: German authorities have confirmed on Friday (June 12) that the number of people infected with the H1N1 swine flu virus at a Japanese school had risen overnight from 32 to 46.
Most of the affected are children, according to health authorities in the western city of Duesseldorf, home to Germany's largest Japanese community.
The father of one child and the parents of another student were also diagnosed with the virus, according to the authorities.
It is the most concentrated outbreak of the virus so far in Europe's largest economy.
The health ministry in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia said on Thursday the majority of the cases at the Japanese school were detected on Wednesday evening.
According to city authorities, health officials believe two different sources caused the outbreak.
One of the 560 students at the school recently returned from a trip to Malta and then participated in a school journey to various German cities which 24 other children attended.
Duesseldorf health authorities have announced a news conference for 2 p.m. (1200 GMT). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
