- Story Text: Forty-one people were known to have died by November 8 in the serious flooding in the Eastern USA. Days of rain, caused by Hurricane Juan, swelled rivers, devastating farmland and industrial areas alike. Police said parts of Richmond, Virginia, were under seven metres (22 feet) of water. Huge fuel tanks were afloat after the muddy floodwater of the James River spilled into low-lying areas. national guardsmen patrolled flooded streets to prevent looting and to rescue people caught by the surging waters. Famous monuments in Washington DC were in peril after the swollen Potomac River overflowed its banks. The plaza of the Jefferson memorial was flooded, but by November 8, the water had not reached the steps leading to the historic statue. Over 4,000 homes in the state of West Virginia have been destroyed, and the damage to property has been calculated in millions of dollars. As residents of the ravaged communities calculated in millions of dollars. As residents of the ravaged communities begin to return to their homes, further anxiety awaits them. Emergency workers says swamped sewage plants and damaged medical centres will exacerbate the situation and lead to public problems.
