Salvadorean government forces were reported on Tuesday (12 January) to have mounted a successful three day offensive against rebels camped near San Vincente, 65 kilometres (40 miles) west of San Salvador. Some 50 guerrillas were reported killed, for the less of two government troops. About 15,000 leftist guerrillas are fighting to overthrow the junta that came to power in October 1979. Some 32,000 people are said to have died in political violence since then. In 1982, El Salvador remains a war zone. As the New Year began, everyday scenes in the war-torn nation remained the same as in 1981. Guerrillas roamed the countryside, bridges remained bombed out, there were refugees in inadequate camps, and patrolling Salvadorean troops. In spite of the war, crop harvesting and the battle for a simple existence continues.
