- Story Text: Rio de Janeiro's Archdiocese unveiled on Tuesday (February 07) the logo for the 2013 World Youth Day (WYD) that will take place in the South American city.
Designers from around the world submitted over 200 designs for the logo and a commission of bishops from Rome and the World Youth Day committee chose the winning design for the logo.
The logo, created by the Brazilian Gustavo Huguenin, has the shape of a heart with the famous Sugar Loaf mountain and the Christ the Redeemer statue. It design also uses the Brazilian colours of blue, yellow and green, which are all present on Brazil's flag.
Huguenin said he was honoured by the choice of his design.
"As a designer I offer to the Catholic Church the gifts that God has given to me and that I have improved academically. It is an honour to be able to create a logo of one of the world's largest events," he said.
Rio de Janeiro's Governor Sergio Cabral said the event was important for the city.
"The WYD (World Youth Day) will help to consolidate a pacific Rio. A city of peace, of pacified communities. This event will need the help and integration of our society," he said.
During the unveiling of the new logo, Rio's famous Christ the Redeemer statue was illuminated in Green and yellow, Brazil's colours.
On Monday Rio's iconic Christ statue was also illuminated in multi-colours to represent the 150 countries that will take part in World Youth Day.
World Youth Day, to be held in Rio de Janeiro in 2013, is a youth-oriented catholic event that was begun by Pope John Paul II.
Last August, Pope Benedict XVI announced that Rio de Janeiro will host the next event in 2013. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
