- Story Text: Amid a combination of comic capers fro Bob Hope and serious sport form the world's top golfers, Spaniard, Jose-Marie Canizares, won the Bob Hope British Classic by one stroke on September 25. In a dazzling finish he played the last four holes in five under par, with an eagle at the sixteenth and birdies at the others, to win byu one shot from Northern Ireland's David Feherty. Canizares had the advantage of not being the overnight leader and therefore did not have to play with the celebrities taking part. Comedian Bob Hope, ex-President Gerald ford, together with film star Telly Savalas did little to enhance the serious side of golf. Bob Hope finished on the final green by missing his last two putts and flicking the ball into the hole with his club. It was just what the spectators wanted to see, but something of a distraction for the real competitors.Canizares, runner-up in four major tournaments last year and three times this season, finished with a total of 269,19 under par. His achievements was made all the more exciting because he compiled the bulk of his winning margin over the last three rounds, entering them at only 14 under par. His eventual score was exactly the same as his total in 1980 when he also won the tournament. At the eighteenth hole the 36-year-old spaniard had a 30-foot putt to make the title safe from Feherty. He hit it firmly and the ball sailed smoothly into the hole. Bob Hope presented him with his winning cheque of 18,30 pounds (27,600 dollars).
