- Story Text: U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Vietnam's southern, Ho Chi Minh city on Saturday (December 14, 2013) on a visit to push forward ties with the communist country.
Kerry's visits to Vietnam and later the Philippines aim to emphasize U.S. presence in South East Asia.
It comes as Washington steps up efforts to court its former war rival to establish a trade pact and security ties with a country on the doorstep of regional superpower China.
After visiting the southern commercial hub Ho Chi Minh City , Kerry will take a trip down the Mekong Delta river where he used to serve as a commander of a patrol boat during the Vietnam war.
On Monday (December 16) Kerry will meet Vietnam's leaders before departing for the Philippines on the same day.
Both Vietnam and the Philippines has longstanding sovereignty disputes with China over territories in the South China Sea. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
