- Story Text: More than 1,200 dancers attempt a new Guinness record in New York's Times Square.
More than 1,200 international dancers closed several blocks around 42nd street on Tuesday (July 13) morning in an attempt to set the Guinness World Record for a new category: the longest choreographed line of dancers, non-conga.
The final tally for the record attempt included 1,278 dedicated dancers who showed up at 6am on a rainy morning to high-kick it to "New York, New York." With a light rain falling on Times Square, "Raindrops are falling on my head"
or "Singing in the Rain" might have been better song selections.
The attempt was organized by Dance Masters of America, an association of professional dance instructors. Since the category is new, they are optimistic that they have set a new record. The Guinness Book of World Records will evaluate their claim and confirm the record within weeks.
"Now every kid can go home to their city, no matter how big or how small, and say they danced on Broadway. They kicked on Broadway," said Lee Garrad, the President of Dance Masters of America, who organized the record as part of their annual convention.
The participants were happy to show how exciting dance can be, with qualified and certified instructors.
"It was really exciting, even though, like, you got water splashed, from your shoes kicking in your face, but it was really fun," says Kelly Cooper, one of the younger participants.
"It was fun to get just being in a bigger group of lots of dancers having fun," says Amanda Meadeos.
Most of those who were invited to help setting up the record attempt are high-school girls. James Brodie, there with a wife and daughter, says "It was very exciting. It was a little wet and chilly, but it was lot of fun. We were trying to do the world's longest high-kick team, and I think it was a lot of fun."
Being one of the oldest associations of professional dance instructors in the world, the DMA offers dance teachers the opportunity to learn new techniques and perfect old skills in ballet, tap, jazz and modern dance. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
