- Story Text: Hundreds of Catholic Christians gathered at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem to mark Holy Saturday (March 30), believed to commemorate the day that Jesus Christ's body laid in the tomb.
The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Foad Twal led a ceremony inside the church, in which he lit a candle which was then passed on to the candles of worshippers.
The annual procession attracts Christians from all over the world.
"And now is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus and we are here and we celebrate the life, we celebrate the light. Jesus is the light and he must give us light to be a light in this world," Bendel, a German tourist, told Reuters Television.
The Church of the Holy sepulchre in Jerusalem is believed by Christians to be the site of Jesus' crucifixion, burial and resurrection.
The Easter holiday culminates on Easter Sunday (March 31) when Christians believe Jesus rose from the dead, three days after being crucified. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
