- Story Text: Over one million people gathered in Berlin to welcome the New Year with a big firework display over the Brandenburg Gate.
Highlight of the New Year's celebration was an attempt to create the largest flashmob in the world with the New Year's eve revellers dancing Gangnam Style. The dance became extremely popular in Germany after the three times Formula 1 world champion, Sebastian Vettel performed it together with South Korean rapper Psy. The previous flashmob record stands at 80.000 people.
The New Year kicked off with a fireworks display over the Tiergarten adjacent to the Brandenburg Gate where 6,000 rockets and other fireworks shot into the sky for 11 minutes .
The crowd came from all over the world to celebrate the New Year in style at the mall behind Brandenburg Gate. Some had New Year's resolutions, some did not. "Yes, it's to live life to the fullest, a little bit more. And to work harder and play harder," said one reveller from New Zealand. And a couple from England added: "I just want to be a nicer person. For everyone. It's a nice world, we all need to be nice people. There is too much bad and we all need to be good."
But there were the ordinary resolutions as giving up smoking, exercising and being healthier. "Well, he wants to quit smoking," said a young woman from Berlin. "And I want to stay away more from sweets."
And some refused to make any resolutions at all.
"I don't make resolutions, because I feel like it's too big of a standard to ever live up to. But I think that if your New Years is good than you gonne have a good year."
Many revellers had been waiting for the big event since early evening, entertained on the big stage with international rock and pop acts like Bonnie Tyler, the Pet Shop Boys, Blue, Oceana, as well as Loreen, the winner of the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest and singer of "Euphoria." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
