- Story Text: It's been 54 years since a Japanese actress has graced the Broadway musical stage, but superstar Yonekura Ryoko is breaking the streak with her debut in New York's hit musical, "Chicago."
Having played the role of Roxie Hart in the Japanese version of the musical in 2008 and 2010, the only difference was the audience.
The actress recalls what it felt like to take the Broadway stage for the very first time.
"I was very nervous the first day and even five or six hours before the show I started to tremble and it was very difficult for me to put on my makeup and I never get nervous like this, but now I realized, this is how I get nervous in a real situation," Yonekura told Reuters.
The role she says, was an honor for her. Not because Miyoshi Umeki was the last Japanese actress to take the stage in 1958, but because it was an incredible opportunity.
"When I see the guests in the audience, I realize that it's been 54 years, but personally it is a very important thing for me, not because it's been 54 years, but because I challenged it. It was a big step for me and it was going to be a great chance for me," said Yonekura.
"It's very meaningful because I did it. It was very meaningful because I was nervous and I think it's going to go to my next challenge."
And if Yonekura has it her way, there will be more Broadway lights in her future.
"I am still in the middle of the stage, so I don't think about the next stage, but now I'm doing my best without any regret and I want to finish it until July 15," Yonekura told Reuters.
"And this time, I only performed for a week and I didn't really feel this way before, but now, I really want to come back to this family in the future, so I can perform longer the next time."
Yonekura's performance in Broadway's Chicago will conclude on July 15. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
