East Germany's new premier Hans Modrow on Friday called for more private enterprise to help rescue the country's troubled economy, while rejecting any talk of German reunification as "dangerous and unrealistic."
In his first speech to Parliament since he took over as premier on Monday, Modrow presented his new, 28-member Cabinet for approval. The Communists still dominate but their non-Communist allies have been awarded more than one-third of the posts.
Modrow's government faces the massive task of reforming East Germany's struggling economy, as well as trying to restore popular trust in a leadership that until a month ago was governed by Stalinist edicts. Despite promises of reform from both Modrow and Communist Party chief Egon Krenz, this week's mass demonstrations indicated a population impatient for wholesale political change.
Also on Friday, Berlin's Police Chief told television crews at the Brandenburg Gate they would have to move before the wall could be demolished.
