- Story Text: Latvian President Andris Berzins received his Croatian counterpart Ivo Josipovic in Riga on Monday (April 2) where he signed the bill ratifying Croatia's accession to the EU and approved by Latvian parliament earlier.
"It was a great honour for us to be present here during you signed the ratification law that your parliament adopted few days ago. It is really important sign of friendship between two countries. Thank you very much," said Josipovic at a joint press-conference following the signing ceremony and talks.
Provided all 27 member states ratify its accession, the Adriatic state will enter the EU on July 1, 2013, more than two decades after breaking away from socialist Yugoslavia and fighting a 1991-95 war to secure independence.
The presidents also discussed ways of developing cooperation between the countries.
"It is very important to strengthen the ties between North and South. Many infrastructure projects are envisaged and participation not only of big and economically strong countries but also smaller countries is very important in this process. I hope that enterprises from both countries, from your country and Croatia will find a proper place in this important process," said Josipovic. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
