- Story Text: A group of Indian opposition students staged a protest outside the Sri Lankan High Commission in New Delhi on January 11 against the killings of two Indian fishermen four days earlier and continuing ethnic violence in Sri Lanka. The demonstrators, members of the opposition Dalit Majdoor Kisan Party (DMK), faced a police cordon surrounding the High Commission. The protesters called upon the High Commissioner to demand that his government take steps to protect the minority Tamil population of Sri Lanka, and carried banners decrying the January 7 killing of two Indian fishermen allegedly by one of the Colombo government's gunboats. In reprisal, Indian coast Guard vessels seized a Sri Lankan patrol boat on January 11, heightening still further the simmering tensions between the neighbouring countries. Police in India's southern-most stage of Tamil Nadu, home for millions of tamils fiercely loyal to their brethren living in northern Sri Lanka, detained the patrol boat's crew for questioning about the deaths of the two fishermen. Sri Lanka has strenuously denied India's accusation that its gunboat was responsible for the deaths.
