- Story Text: On October 29, 1898, Kaiser Wilhelm II and his wife the Empress Augusta Victoria made a historic trip to Jerusalem. Their visit received unprecedented coverage from local and foreign media. Now, a virtual exhibition in Jerusalem's Tower of David Museum re-visits their tour through the lens of journalism and media.
The exhibit's virtual emphasis gives visitors a unique taste of the Kaiser's time, said the chief curator of the Tower of David Museum.
"All the idea, to have an exhibit that presents the city in the end of the 19th century, all the transformation of the skyline of the city, on the way that the press blow up this big or small event, it depends who looks at it - it's the issue of this exhibit, that it's made in a completely different way of historical exhibits. There is no objects, no documents, nothing. Everything is virtual," said Renee Sivan.
"We have newspapers that are virtual newspapers. We have huge photographs that you can go into the photographs, and you can also even visit Kaiser's time. Not only visit - you could be part of the party and take a picture with (Zionist leader Theodor) Herzl, with Augusta Victoria, with the Kaiser and send to your friends," she added.
The down-trodden city prepared for the royal visit for a year, and the week's visit was marked with lavish celebrations, a museum press release said.
The materials on display include original newspapers, photographs, articles and explanations which are virtually presented, allowing a unique experience for visitors.
Both local and foreign photographers and journalists followed the visit, and foreign newspapers devoted caricatures to the trip, the press releases noted.
Eilat Lieber, the director of the Tower of David Museum, described the relevance of the exhibit.
"The journalists of the past made for us a great story, a great occasion to look to certain details and to learn more about people, about names, about this city," she said.
In addition to the coverage of the Kaiser's visit, the exhibition focuses on the complex preparations, the difficult journey, the extravagant receptions and the inauguration of the Church of the Redeemer in the heart of the Old City which was the visit's highlight, the museum's press release added. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
