- Story Text: Sinabung the tallest volcano in North Sumatra continued to spew volcanic ash on Tuesday (November 26), forcing Indonesians over the last three weeks to leave their homes for temporary shelters.
The government raised the volcano's emergency alert to the highest level on Sunday (November 24) after volcanic activity increased at the crater in west Indonesia.
On Tuesday, the active volcano erupted a nearly 300 metre column of ash and gases continually from its crater.
Officials said the volcanic ash did not disrupt flights at Medan but there had been some delays because of safety issues.
Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) recommended the public keep a five kilometre radius distance from the crater.
"Today is dominated by volcanic tremor activities and the volcanic gusts remain high. The activity of the volcano is still high," said the head of PVMBG, Hendrasto, who like many Indonesians has only one name.
The number of people seeking temporary shelters increases as the volcanic activity intensifies.
On Monday evening, there were nearly 17,000 villagers staying in temporary accommodation provided by the local government.
Sinabung is one of nearly 130 active volcanoes in the world's fourth-most populated country, which straddles the "Pacific Ring of Fire". - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
