- Story Text: Small by her family's standards but already taller than most animals, a baby giraffe has made her first public appearance at Tierpark zoo in Berlin.
Baby giraffe Jette (pronounce Yette) seemed to enjoy her first public appearance on Friday (June 14), running around her family members happily within the zoo's enclosure.
With her birth on May 26, the number of giraffes at Berlin Tierpark zoo went up to seven.
It was the second birth of a giraffe at the zoo this year.
Anton, Jette's half brother, was born on the 8th of March from the same father, but a different mother. Jette's mother is fifteen-year-old Elli.
Jette is the German shortname for Henrietta.
Some lucky visitors had a glimpse of the birth. Joachim Kohrmann, a zookeeper, described the birth. "The birth began while visitors were still watching. The last visit of the day was at 6pm. Then nothing happened for a while... At 1030pm, the zookeeper went to check, and there she was, standing next to her mother."
Measuring 1,85 meters at birth, Jette was born 10 centimetres taller than her half brother Anton. Giraffes usually reach their adult size by the age of four.
During her lifetime, a female giraffe can have up to ten babies. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
