People in the eastern town of Tunceli in Turkey woke up to an earthquake on Monday (January 26) that measured 6.5 on the richter scale and caused structural damage to buildings in the area. Aftershocks were felt in several major cities.
One person died and several were reported injured.
The Red Crescent aid agency sent around 124 tents, as well as 2,000 blankets and 80 stoves to help people most affected by the 'quake. Many people in the village of Tunceli could not enter their houses because of fears of structural damage to their homes, and had to wait outside while aid was distributed and tents put up.
"More then help we need water, electricity and telephone to call our relatives. They are worried about us, they can not reach us either. We lack of water, the animals are in difficult situation, we can not reach the stable," one local resident said.
Interior Minister Abdulkadir Aksu told Anatolian bad weather conditions were hampering rescue efforts.
