- Story Text: INTRODUCTION: The United Nations Energy conference in Nairobi divided into two committees on Wednesday (12 August) to consider alternatives to expensive and dwindling hydro-carbon fuels. Speakers at the first two days of the conference have stressed the need for development in these areas, especially for impoverished nations.
SYNOPSIS: Many sections of the Kenya community have become involved in the Energy conference, and the police band led a parade of marchers. The conservationists hoped to impress delegates with their 'firewood' display, which sought UN action to deal with the fuelwood crisis threatening many Third World nations, especially in Africa. About 300 black and white Kenyans took part in the peaceful demonstration.
Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau later spoke to marchers, supporting their action.
The eleven-day meeting at the Kenyatta Conference Centre is being attended by UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim, and several heads of state.
Before tuesday's (11 August) session, several of the firewood marchers conducted a symbolic ceremony at the steps of the Conference Centre by placing wood at the feet of the delegates.
Dr. Waldheim joined officials to hear the Canadian Prime Minister's address.
Mr. Trudeau pledged that Canada's international development policies will in future be titled towards the energy needs of Third World countries.
He said Canada's energy aid, bi-lateral in design, has been one of the highest percentages among supplier nations and would increase over the next five years. During this period, Canada will be spending around 820 million U.S. dollars in this area. Mr. Trudeau also sounded a warning that the United Nations must fulfil its pledges to avoid confidence in the organisation being eroded. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
