- Story Text: French Ligue 1 leaders Monaco will have to play a more compact game against mid-table Saint-Etienne if they want to prevent them from scoring, the club's coach said on Thursday (October 3).
Monaco could only manage a 1-1 draw against 10th-placed Reims in their last league outing on Sunday and coach Claudio Ranieri said at a news conference ahead of the game on Saturday, that the team needed to be more compact, especially dealing with Saint-Etienne's fast wingers.
"I want a more compact team, always, because that's soccer. On Saturday there is another good team coming, which plays the ball well, which plays well on the sides. There are a lot of players who dribble very well, very fast. So concentration is very important and also to play compact," Ranieri told reporters.
Monaco, who are unbeaten this season, have scored the most goals in Ligue 1 so far with 14 ad their strike force of Colombian Radamel Falcao (seven) and Frenchman Emmanuel Riviere (six) heads the individual standings.
Defender Ricardo Cavalho also said they would have to stay more compact in defence than they have done in the previous games.
"You have to be more compact, as a team also it is important to be more compact, don't have a chance for them to score but we are doing well but in last games, you have to be a little bit more compact for me," he said.
Monaco have 18 points from eight matches and a goal difference of +10 to PSG's +8.
Saint-Etienne have 13 points from eight games. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
