- Story Text: Members of a Russian forensics team started to help their Indonesian counterparts on Sunday (May 13) to identify the remains of Russians who died when their Sukhoi passenger jet crashed into a volcano in Indonesia.
The team of five experts will work together with 24 Indonesians.
Indonesian police said body bags containing the remains of victims were transported to a police hospital in Jakarta from the crash site in Mount Salak, an area West of the province of Java.
The plane crashed during an exhibition flight with more 45 people on board.
"We can say that we have retrieved two big body parts of Russians on board, but the rest are various -- there are big parts and small parts. I think we need quite a long time to identify those parts," said Andey Kovalev, head of the Russian team during a news conference.
Kovalev said the teams will work around the clock.
"The Russian Federation is keen to work hard to speed up this process, hopefully we can finish it within two weeks," Kovalev added.
An Indonesian official said 38 Indonesian, eight Russian, one American and one Frenchman were on board the plane. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
