- Story Text: 'I'll Have Another' took an early morning gallop Wednesday (May 30) on the track where he will attempt to become the first Triple Crown winner in 34 years at next month's Belmont Stakes.
The colt won the Preakness Stakes on May 19th to add the second leg of the Triple Crown to his win at the Kentucky Derby.
After emerging from his stables, 'I'll Have Another' was led from the barn and then brought out to the track alongside a former racehorse called 'Lava Man', a companion for the young colt.
Wednesday's training included a strong gallop around the 1-1/2 mile (2,414 metre) dirt track under the guidance of exercise rider Jonny Garcia. The horse is trained by Doug O'Neill.
'I'll Have Another', who is bidding to become the first horse since 'Affirmed' in 1978 to win the Triple Crown, will continue morning training sessions until Belmont Stakes on June 9th.
The final field for the $1 million (USD) race in New York will not be decided until a few days before the jump but the connections of 'I'll Have Another's chief rivals, 'Union Rags' and 'Dullahan', are growing with confidence.
Both horses were beaten by 'I'll Have Another' in the Kentucky Derby but are fresh after skipping the Preakness to concentrate on the final leg.
With 'Bodemeister', who finished runner-up in each of the first two legs, opting out of the Belmont Stakes, 'Dullahan', who finished third in the Derby, is looming as the big danger to spoil 'I'll Have Another's bid. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
