- Story Text: An international effort is underway to try to minimise the effects of the massive oil slick in the Gulf.
The oil has broken into patches floating throughout the northern half of the Gulf. The slick, containing an estimated 11 million barrels of oil, has caused severe damage to wildlife.
Conservationists from around the world have set up a rescue centre in Saudi Arabia to treat birds covered in oil.
The allies say the slick was caused by Iraqis opening taps at a Kuwaiti oil refinery, but Iraq says it was caused by allied bombing.
The priority for the operation is to protect desalination plants that provide two-thirds of Saudi Arabia's drinking water. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
