- Story Text: A new anti-cancer treatment could be on the market within years after a breakthrough discovery by Australian scientists in stimulating the body's immune system.
A biotech company's research into a treatment for cancer has been hailed a world breakthrough at a biotechnology conference in Washington on Tuesday (June 24).
Scientists from Melbourne's Monash University are now set to expand their research into a treatment for cancer and potentially for HIV/AIDS.
Victorian biotech company Norwood Abbey said clinical trials of the new treatment were underway, as the drug on which the treatment was based was already in use.
The treatment involves boosting the body's production of disease-fighting T-cells.
The discovery, by Monash University scientists, was unveiled early on Tuesday by Victorian Premier Steve Bracks at the Bio2003 world biotechnology conference in Washington.
Human clinical trials on 40 patients in Melbourne will be extended from Australia into the United States and Europe.
Six top hospitals in the United States and United Kingdom have agreed to test the technology on selected groups of cancer patients within the next year. Swiss hospitals will also test the project with HIV/AIDS patients in conjunction with the United States National Institutes of Health. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
