The draw for the 1982 World Cup Soccer finals was made in Madrid on Saturday (16 January). The opening games for the 24 finalists were decided at the Congress Palace before an audience of world soccer administrators, the media, and an estimated television audience of 500 million people in more than 50 countries. Prince Felipe of Asturias, the 13-year-old heir to the Spanish throne, preside over the draw which was confused by an elaborate seeding arrangement designed to keep certain teams apart in the first round groups. The four South American side in particulars did not want to eliminate each other in these early games. finally the teams, drawn from rotating metal cages by young Madrid orphans, were placed in the six qualifying groups for the competition which kicks off in Barcelona on June 13.
