- Story Text: Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev arrived on Friday (May 18) at the G8 summit representing Russia in the absence of President Vladimir Putin who had called U.S. President Barack Obama to say he would have to skip the summit due to scheduling issues related to finalizing Kremlin appointments.
Medvedev joins the leaders of the UK, France, Canada, Italy and Japan at the G8 leaders' summit where Europe's debt crisis will be the main focus during the two-day meeting.
Obama welcomed Russian, German, French, British, Italian, Japanese, Canadian and EU leaders for a weekend meeting while political instability in Greece and market uncertainty in Spain continues to threaten the euro zone.
Setting the tone for the weekend summit, Obama has made clear he was aligning himself with the new French president's drive for more economic stimulus in the recession-plagued euro zone instead of emphasizing belt-tightening programs spearheaded by Germany.
Hollande seeks to take the edge off austerity with more job-creating infrastructure investments.
The leaders of the world's seven largest economies have communicated their readiness for a productive working session.
Medvedev is scheduled to hold a series of bilateral meetings with the countries' leaders, including Obama. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
